MKDA designed a distinctive, branded environment for Kensington Publishing at 900 Third Avenue, inspired by a library concept that harmonizes with the company’s literary roots. Throughout the workspace, book-lined shelves are prominently featured, while specialty book-themed wallcoverings and noir wood panels, reminiscent of book pages, reinforce the immersive literary experience. The project team paired these thematic elements with a carefully curated monochromatic palette of black and white, complemented by red oak wood accents, to create a moody yet inviting atmosphere.
The reception and lounge space was crafted to evoke the intimacy and comfort of a residential study, establishing a sophisticated first impression for visitors. The reception area includes a custom desk that combines luxurious marble with warm red oak veneer, offering a striking contrast to the dynamic silver noir wood panels that line the walls. Adjacent to this, the lounge is furnished with plush seating and bespoke accessories, cultivating a cozy atmosphere that serves as an ideal setting for unwinding with a book.
Key collaboration areas, like the pantry and conference rooms, continue to blend practicality with a refined aesthetic. The pantry, adorned with a striking black-and-white book-themed wallcovering, seamlessly integrates into the overall narrative of the space while providing a comfortable gathering area for employees. The main conference room is equipped with unique Contour ceiling baffles, which not only improve acoustics but also add a sculptural element to the design. These rooms foster both formal and informal collaboration and are thoughtfully situated to deliver a balance between privacy and openness.
Drawing inspiration from the communal atmosphere of a public library, the work area embraces a bright and open design, promoting productivity and a shared sense of purpose.
The layout features six executive offices, 16 private offices, and 20 workstations, all configured to accommodate the varied work styles and tasks of Kensington’s employees.
